Actual medical provider here that has delt with multiple rectal foreign bodies. You'll need to go to the ER and it is relatively time sensitive. If you leave it in, you can cause necrosis(death) of the tissue in your colon/rectum and/or perforation and/or infection. Usually we will perform an X-Ray or CT to visualize where the object is. If it is somewhere we might be able to reach we will give the patient meds to calm/sedate them and go in with our hand to try and retrieve it. Sometimes depending on the object shape and size and the person's body type, another provider will apply pressure by pushing on the outside of the abdomen to guide the object towards the rectum and the hand of the provider “fishing” for it. You can sometimes use an anal speculum as well but this might be more difficult for the patient to tolerate or obstruct your hand from getting to the object. Again, depends on what you're trying to retrieve. If these conservative measures are ineffective the patient will need to go to the OR. surgeons may then try the same methods more aggressively as the patient can tolerate more when they're under anesthesia. If still unsuccessful they may require opening the abdomen surgically and either massaging the object out of the rectum or cutting open the bowel to retrieve it. If there's evidence of perforation or damage to the tissue of the bowel, it may require a temporary colostomy or colonic resection.
